Smriti Halls and David Litchfield have created a wonderfully optimistic read, that draws upon the dark and despair in order to locate the hope and colour in life. Published by Walker Books, Rain Before Rainbows is a warm and allegoric comfort tale that will be a light for many feeling affected by this current crisis.

Smriti Halls is an award-winning, critically acclaimed children’s author. Since publication of her first picture book in 2012, she has had a U.S. number 1 bestseller and been published in more than 30 languages, from Arabic to Afrikaans and from Catalan to Korean. David Litchfield is an award-winning illustrator renowned for The Bear and the Piano titles. He has also illustrated a number of picture books for authors such as Ross Montgomery, Andy Stanton and Sally Lloyd-Jones as well as book covers for David Almond, Kate Dicamillo, Neil Patrick Harris, Chloe Daykin and many more.

In June, Walker Books released Rain Before Rainbows ahead of publication as a free eBook to raise awareness for Save the Children’s #SaveWithStories campaign, which is helping children most affected by the coronavirus pandemic. The book was read by Stanley Tucci as part of this campaign.

With the rainbow becoming a warm symbol of hope during these last twelve months it is intended that this uplifting story continues to be a source of comfort and light to children and families, universally.

Rain before rainbows. Clouds before sun. Night before daybreak. A new day’s begun.

A girl and her companion fox travel together through uncertain times, towards a place of colour, light and life. Along the way, they find friends to guide and support them. Together, they build a future and discover there is a way out of the darkness, into the light of the rainbow, allegoric for the times we are in. A book that carries immense hope at its heart, this book is an immediate pick me up for anyone suffering a difficult time, and I can see why it was used specifically for children struggling with this last year.

The story is simple, the artistry stunning and combined the story is affecting and uplifting. David’s award-winning work with Smriti’s minimal prose is a beautiful collaboration.
