Flo is a duck that is easily distracted, and often likes to do the opposite of what Daddy Duck asks. We can all relate to that, as children, right? This read-aloud Springtime delight from author-illustrator Jarvis is a vibrant book for the toddlers, as they realise that often following the parent’s advice is for their own good.
Follow Me, Flo! is about Flo and her daddy’s visit to a relative’s new nest, Daddy Duck says Flo must follow him or she’ll get lost. With song at the core of the book, they collectively sing a song with all the directions for the journey — up, down, in, and out.
However, it is not long before Flo starts to make up her own words, and with this gets carried away literally. And of course, gets in a spot of bother. Oh, no — now a fox is following Flo! Where is Daddy Duck? What are the words to his song again?
Jarvis studied graphic design and previously worked as a record sleeve designer, website designer and an animation director before becoming a children’s book illustrator. His books with Walker include Mrs Mole, I’m Home! and Alan’s Big, Scary Teeth, which won the 2017 V&A Best Illustrated Book. As both author and illustrator he combines the pictures into the story, thinking about both as he creates his titles, and Follow Me is a good example of that.
Vibrant and bold, Follow Me, Flo! is a wonderful title that reminds young ones that following the advice of mum or dad is not always the wrong thing to do. With brilliant rhyming, there is much opportunity for bonding between parents and toddlers with this new book, and a simple, yet imaginative tale to follow. Heartfelt and humourous with a quiet moral, Follow Me, Flo! will be enjoyed by children and adults alike.
