Toloache are a Switzerland/UK based progressive metal band named after a plant famously used during mystical rituals by Mexican shamans known for its intense hallucinations. Inspired by such ancient spiritual wisdoms, the band took on the name to embrace the, likewise, ‘hallucinatory’ complex arrangements that progressive metal is associated with. Not only that, they connect with the name on a spiritual level too, their UK-based singer Andrina having been brought up in a Swiss forest surrounded by witchcraft, tarot and crystals. Their latest single is the deeply dark Watching Close was recently released across all download and streaming platforms so The Fountain caught up with Andrina to discuss the new music as well as plans for the year.
TF: You have a new single out, what has the reception been like to Watching Close?
It’s been amazing! It’s always scary to release a debut single with a band no one has ever heard of. The feedback has been fantastic, we couldn’t be happier and can’t wait to release our second single soon.
TF: And can you sum up the track in one sentence?
Watching Close is about the chaotic vibe of overstimulation and how we see and read all these horrible things through a screen everyday while we are just sort of paralysed.
TF: What is your plan for the remainder of the year, an LP?
Our next single is already ready to go, we’re just about to record the music video for it. An album won’t be out until sometime next year but we got a lot of other exciting stuff planned until then.
TF: When can we next expect a live show from you now that venues and gigs are kicking off again?
We’re hoping to start gigging in early 2022. It hasn’t been easy to plan during the Pandemic as my band is in Switzerland and I live in London.
