Multi-instrumentalist Duke Boara, aka James Toomey, who plays piano, guitar and drums, has described his music as ‘instrumental melodic electronic/house’. Currently in London, growing up in England’s West Country, studying and living in Newcastle, he also spent five years living and travelling in Asia, where world music and instruments such as the sitar sank into his musical consciousness, leading to a rich melding of cultures. With Wairau Bay out, The Fountain caught up with Duke/James to discuss the new music and further plans.

TF: Hey Duke, you have a new single out, what has the reception been like to Wairau Bay?

Super good so far. I’ve never put anything out so far that has had this kind of instant reception, so I’m very happy. It’s crazy that so many people are listening to it, it’s pretty amazing.

TF: Can you sum up the track in one sentence?

I think it has a lot of energy, carries itself well and I hope it makes people feel good!

TF: What is your plan for the remainder of the year? We hear you have quite a schedule of new music in the works…

I’m hopefully moving to London soon which I’m really looking forward to. I have a lot of new music coming this year and next, which I’m currently working on.

TF: Now that venues and gigs are kicking off again, where will we have a chance to see you play? And what is the venue or event you most want to play in the future?

I definitely can’t wait to get out and playing. I’m planning a show in London soon. Although probably quite far off, I’d absolutely love to play at Printworks in London. Also, Fabric would be insane.
