With Passenger out, the new offering from the jazz-spoken word project, Poetica, The Fountain caught up with those behind the project. The brain child of alt-folk superstar Rachael Sage, Poetica features a plethora of exciting musicians and is helmed by Sage herself, in the guise of poet rather than singer-songwriter for the first time. Sage spoke about the new music, gigs and plans for more gigs over in the UK.

TF: You have a new single out, what has the response been like to Passenger

It’s been really exciting to see how my existing listeners are embracing such a different, more cross-genre project from me, and how supportive press has been of this collaborative new direction. It’s still the very early stages though for POETICA and we haven’t even had our first in-person show yet…so I’m a bit nervous but also eager to recreate this music in front of a live audience!

TF: And can you sum up the track in one sentence?

Passenger is an atmospheric, blues-based spoken-word piece that explores the concept of opposites attracting and evolving into passionate desire; I played percussion, and guests include ambient guitarist Gerry Leonard (David Bowie), UK-based harmonica player Will Wilde, and Grammy nominated cellist Dave Eggar.

TF: What is your plan for the remainder of the year?

I just started the US tour for POETICA, and have a bunch of shows ahead of me across the US, which is exciting.
I’ve also been writing songs and intend to record a new EP over the winter, along with overseeing several projects by other artists on my record label, MPress. It all keeps me out of trouble, for the most part!

TF: When can we next expect a live show from you now that venues and gigs are kicking off again?

I’m in the process right now of booking festivals and gigs for the Spring/Summer 2022, including shows in the UK!! I’ll also be supporting the amazing Howard Jones on his upcoming acoustic tour in February, throughout the US. I’ve missed making music with other humans so much, and am delighted that I’ll finally be touring, and reconnecting – Covid-safely of course – with my listeners in the US and in the UK, my “home away from home”!
