Birmingham-based Dawn After Dark have issued their first new recording in 32 years with Maximum Overdrive. The song, which the band is giving away as a free download at their website, is accompanied by a video from director Oliver Fowler. The Fountain caught up with the band to discuss the return, the music, the plans and the gigs.

TF: You have a new single out, what has the reception been like to Maximum Overdrive?

Nobody would say, ‘Oh, it’s been terrible, no-one likes it.’ But we’re honestly pleased with the reaction, especially after 32 years away! it’s been played on a bunch of radio stations and our longstanding fans love the re-recording of a song they’ve held close to their hearts for more than three decades. That’s important to us. The real difficulty for a band like ours is getting heard above the din of so many bands trying to be heard at the same time. We’d honestly back Maximum Overdrive against anything new by the biggest bands out there, the AC/DCs, Guns and Cults of this world. But there’s so much noise that it’s hard to be heard.

TF: And can you sum up the track in one sentence?

Focus on the triangle, turn up your speakers, free your mind, you are about to experience a higher state of desire known as Maximum Overdrive!

TF: What inspired you to make a come back after 32 years?

We felt there was unfinished business, we knew we’re way better now than we were back then and we wanted to experience the exhilaration of playing to a room packed full of people who love what we do again.

TF: What is your plan for the remainder of the year?

Another single at the end of September, a special private show for our hardcore fans in our hometown of Birmingham at the start of October, followed by an album release in December, then UK dates of our own that same month, as well as with our pals in Balaam And The Angel. We want to be busy, busy, busy!

TF: When can we next expect a live show from you now that venues and gigs are kicking off again?

See the previous question. You can check out our gigging itinerary and buy tickets for shows at our website.
