Amsterdam-based odd/pop composer Monokino will release a brand new single, Bend Or Break on 29th January 2021. Released as part of an innovative UK-NL cultural exchange, Bend Or Break is a bubbling broth of influences and styles designed to break down barriers and push the limits. Monokino spoke with The Fountain about the track as well as plans for this year.
TF: You have a new single out, what can we expect from Bend or Break?
Bend Or Break is a bubbling broth of influences and styles designed to break down barriers and push the limits. There is a high probability that people will like it but in any case, it will be clear that with this release (along with the previous No Return that suddenly received a lot of attention) Monokino will not disappear from today’s streaming platform climate. It’s written in direct reaction to the endless stream of grim statistics, toxic information and barbed opinion that engulfed us as 2020 unfolded.
TF: How would you sum up the track in one sentence?
Amorphous and mercurial, its snaking rhythms wind around low-slung latino hooks that refuse to be pinned-down. Atonal chords stretch into wiry solos that burn bright, then disconnect.
TF: What is your plan for the remainder of the year, after this release?
Many new releases will arrive. A number of them have already been finished and were all written in 2020. They will be released by Zip Records the Netherlands and JZ records in Shanghai. As soon as clubs and venues are open again, there will be new dates for a full album release show and separate live shows.
TF: Where is your favourite venue for playing live, where is the next place you look most forward to gigging?
That must be Cinetol in Amsterdam. I also organised a lot of shows there and had Dutch bands and musicians perform with acts known abroad. Many underground bands are from France, China and England with whom I also kept in touch during these times. If you’re interested in playing live in Amsterdam, check out: www.gaggroup.nl
