A child of Baltimore, Lauren Lakis grew to embrace the fatalistic spirit of the city in her work and art. With stunningly raw, haunting tones, Lakis has fashioned her own brand of “delightfully gut-churning shoegaze”. Authentic and honest lyricism, paired with lush, darkly romantic vibes, her songs are “a refreshing change from today’s polite rock…” (Earmilk). With hauntingly moody track Sail Away out, Lauren spoke with The Fountain about the reception it has received as well as her plans for 2021.
TF: You have a new single out, what has the reception been like to Sail Away?
It’s been really wonderful connecting with the fans who are into it…I try to reply to every DM I get regarding my music because it means a lot to me when fans take the time to let me know they enjoy something. A lot of people have personally reached out to me about this song, and I appreciate it so much!
TF: How would you sum up the track in one sentence?
It’s one of my favourites as well as very personal…a sense of impending doom and reckoning…to a beat of thunderous percussion and droning guitars.
TF: What is your plan for the remainder of the year, after this release?
I’m currently recording new music at Singing Sands in Portland, Oregon…it’s such a blessing to dive deep into recording again. I’d love to finish producing these brand new songs, work on more videos, and continue writing as much as possible.
TF: Where is your favourite venue for playing live, where is the next place you look most forward to gigging?
My favourite venue would probably have to be the Doug Fir Lounge in Portland…the night we played there was pure magic…but at this point I would play absolutely anywhere! I look forward to touring again, and experiencing my first European tour someday.
