For Canadian duo Paragon Cause, comprising Ottawa residents Jay Bonaparte and Michelle Opthof, it has been little more than twelve months since the release of their EP Lies Between Us; a mix of haunting, dark mystery and totally absorbing indie electronica. The duo returned with the European Edition of What We Started, which was recently dropped via AnalogueTrash. They spoke with The Fountain about the track as well as some of their favourite venues.

TF: You have a new album out, what has the reception been like to What We Started?

The reception has been wonderful in both the UK and North America. Although we are really happy our fans love the new music, it is wonderful that the music is reaching so many new listeners. We get a lot of comments from people who have never heard of us saying how much they enjoy the music. That’s the most important thing for us. Its also great that those in radio, other musicians and those in the industry have been enjoying the music as well. We worked really hard on this and its nice to see the work pay off.

TF: How would you sum it up in one sentence?

Beautiful sadness with a longing for change in musical form.

TF: What is your plan for the remainder of the year, after this single release?

We already have a 2021 album recorded, again with Sune Rose Wagner (The Raveonettes) and we are also working with some other musicians, some from the UK on new material. We need to leave that as a secret right now. Our main focus is on new music, we are always writting and recording. Hopefully once Covid is over, Sune Rose will head back to Ottawa and we’ll record another album.

TF: Where is your favourite venue for playing live, where is the next place you look most forward to gigging?

So far, our favourite place we have played is The Blacksheep Inn in Quebec, Canada. Second favourite would be The Seahorse in Halifax, Nova Scotia. We like gigging, but we love recording more. Hopefully we make it to England.
