Barcelona-native, 22-year-old Jay Blanes moved to London in July 2019 to become a full-time musician. Passionate about many genres, Jay decided to refocus his efforts on commercial indie-folk and the result is his new E.P. Fireworks. Jay spoke with The Fountain about the new record as well as his plans for the rest of the year.
TF: You have a new EP out, what has the reception been like to Fireworks?
This release is taking me to a new place. The reception has been great! My first EP, released in 2018, counts 10.200 streams while this one is about to reach 100.000. Natalie, the first single I released, has received so much love, more than expected actually… I guess everyone wants to be her! I need to say, however, that what I really care about is my grandma’s opinion, and she loves it, so I am as happy as I could be!
TF: How would you sum it up in one sentence?
Indie-folk to move both your soul and your body.
TF: Who do you look to and idolise when it comes to influences with this record?
I have a very broad music taste, so it is hard to say who my influences are, but I would say Ed Sheeran, Kodaline, Coldplay, Damien Rice, James TW, FINNEAS, Julia Michaels… In addition, there are a few Spanish artists that must have sneaked into my songwriting including Pablo Alborán, Maldita Nerea or Leiva.
TF: What is your plan for the remainder of the year, after this EP release?
This EP was meant to become a turning point in my career and help me start properly gigging in London, after having sang in the streets for many months. The coronavirus has made me stay in the virtual world for a little longer, so I will keep producing and writing songs from home! I will seek to collaborate with other artists and I’m planning three more singles before the year is over! Stay tuned 🙂
