Emile is a UK born indie-pop artist, based between London, Berlin and Copenhagen. At the age of 18, he re-embraced his childhood love for pop music, and began working as an engineer at the renowned Kensaltown Studios in London, where he met his current writing and production collaborator Flo Reutter. Having cut his teeth for several years under the watchful eye of producer Martin Terefe, Emile soon found his own voice in songwriting and poetry, and has released new single Pale Imitation. Emile spoke with The Fountain about the single in more depth.
TF: You have a new single out, what has the reception been like to Pale Imitation?
I do indeed! The reception has been overwhelmingly positive! The release has been a bit of a whirlwind process with the pandemic in full force – I’m just really grateful that people have been so receptive to the song.
TF: How would you describe it in one sentence?
Upbeat and fun and wonderfully misunderstood!
TF: Who do you look for inspiration and influence?
In the songwriting process itself (when I’m all by my lonesome), I don’t have any conscious inspiration whatsoever. I’m really proud that I’m creating a musical universe that I think stands on its own two feet. With that said, I do tend to bring really concrete references into the studio. Sometimes that’ll be the production of a band or artist that I’ve been listening to for a long time, and sometimes it’ll just be a song that I came across on the same day. Right now I’m listening to a load of Brockhampton! I think that may subconsciously come across on the next single (don’t worry I won’t start rapping).
TF: What is your plan for the remainder of the year, after this single release, can we look forward to an EP, LP?
No album or EP plans as of yet! There’s a real sense of freedom in being able to experiment with sounds and styles without having to adhere to the pressure of creating a collective piece of work. It’s still early days for me, and my sound is evolving – I’m really lucky in the sense that I can confidently try to do something new with every single that I put out!
