In third grade, Diana Varco kicked her crush in the crotch and her relationship with the male sex didn’t improve from there. What starts as an innocent look into her dating past turns into a heartbreakingly raw serio-comedy about dating, dysfunction and sexual devastation. Told through the voices of 35 characters, Diana triumphantly tells the story of one individual picking up the broken pieces of herself and putting them back together again. Shattered is at the Fringe for the month of August, so we caught up with Diana about the show and her plans for the month.
TF: You are performing at the Edinburgh Fringe this year, how exciting?
Performing Shattered at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival is extremely exciting for me as an artist on a professional level but also as an artist on a personal level. Professionally, Edinburgh is the most prestigious in the world! Personally, performing Shattered at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival this year is important because it is the 10th year of the assault that I talk about in my show. So for me, performing my show everyday this August rewrites that anniversary and it takes back that month. I can’t wait for this journey to begin!
TF: Shattered certainly sounds intriguing, what is the premise?
Shattered uses humor to heal. It is a dark comedy solo show about dating, dysfunction and sexual devastation told through the voices of 35+ characters. Shattered ultimately tells a story of one individual picking up the broken pieces of herself and putting them back together again. It explores themes of the psychological fall out of sexual assault, family abuse cycles, the power of shame and many more.
TF: And what drove the project, where did your influences lie?
My background is improv and comedy! Unfortunately, like everyone, I’ve also experienced a number of personal tragedies. After I was assaulted in 2009, I found it difficult to heal while the world around me joked about my very private pain. In 2017, after years of many frustrating moments, I premiered Shattered. I wanted to create something that would give voice to my experience and help people to understand the devastating psychological impact of rape and the power of shame.
TF: Have you been to the Fringe before, is there anything you are keen to see whilst in Edinburgh?
I’ve never gone to Edinburgh before! I’m excited to see the epic nature of Fringe and experience the beauty of the city! It sounds absolutely magical…and a lot of hard work too 🙂 I’ve done the Hollywood Fringe and had a wonderful time connecting with artists and seeing great shows – so I hope to do that here at Edinburgh, on a much larger scale! My show is very demanding physically and emotionally, so my plans are also to rest up and perform my heart out!
TF: And what are your future plans beyond Shattered?
I have a number of other stories I’d like to write – all based on my life and experiences. I also really enjoy supporting friends in telling their stories too! I’m currently working on a short film and pilot that explores various conversations in motherhood, as well as silly ideas I have here and there for content.
