Comedians Ellie Gibson and Helen Thorn will be at the Fringe this year, celebrating the scummier side of parenting, from drinking wine at teatime to hiding from the PTA. Expect stand-up, sketches, songs and some very scummy stories. Guaranteed to make parents laugh and non-parents happy about their life choices. Ellie and Helen spoke with The Fountain about their plans for August as well as the drivers behind their show, Scummy Mummies.
TF: You are performing at the Edinburgh Fringe this year, how exciting? The Scummy Mummies Show certainly sounds intriguing, what is the premise?
Our show is a celebration of parenting failures, performed by middle-aged women in gold catsuits! It’s a night of comedy for less-than-parents and for non-parents who like to feel good about their life choices. It’s filled with stand-up, sketches and songs and very scummy stories. It’s camp, silly and filthy, what’s not to like?
TF: And what drove the project, where did your influences lie?
We know that parenting is hard, mucky and tiring – but it’s also filled with hilarious moments and we wanted to capture that in our show. Parents spend a lot of time at home, so our shows are a big night out and a release for them, and it is also chance for people without kids to laugh at us too! Of course we are influenced by the great comedy duos like French and Saunders, Mel and Sue and Morecombe and Wise, but we get our most inspiration from stupid things that happen to us everyday. Having kids is an endless source of material.
TF: Have you been to the Fringe before, is there anything you are keen to see whilst in Edinburgh?
This is our first time and we are excited to be performing for the whole month! We are also pretty excited to have a month off childcare, the school run and wiping our kids’ bums, to be honest. It’s going to be great performing our own show – but we can’t wait to see the city, eat a lot of deep fried food, and sink a few pints!
TF: And what are your future plans beyond The Fringe?
We love touring up and down the country – our live shows are really popular and it’s great to spend out nights with hundreds of women. We would love to continue touring until we are old women! Ultimately our dream is have our own Scummy TV Show and to do Vegas, obviously.
The Scummy Mummies debut at this year’s Edinburgh Festival Assembly George Square Blue Room at 19.50 from 1st – 25th August. For tickets, go to www.edfringe.com
