Liz Treyger is at the Edinburgh Fringe this year and is like a cliché Bridget Jones Diary. She doesn’t fit in her pants, she can’t remember what she did even yesterday, she’s got no savings and won’t leave her carbon monoxide-filled apartment to find the love she so desperately wants. She’s in therapy, she’s trying to intermittent fast and buy less crystals. Self-improvement is annoying. She spoke with The Fountain about her show, In The Weeds, and her ambitious plans whilst in Edinburgh this August.

TF: You are performing at the Edinburgh Fringe this year, how excited are you?

I’m very thrilled!!!! I’ve been wanting to go for years and this year finally everything came together. I’m excited to perform every night and grow and get better and see everyone’s shows and party so much but not too much to lose my voice and I heard I’ll cry, so I’m ready for that too.

TF: Your show certainly sounds intriguing, what is the premise?

Basically being self-destructive and ruining my own life because I’m scared of getting what I truly want so I create barriers and chaos to focus on instead. All the things I’ve been learning in therapy since I got dumped two years ago and super sad. It’s about smoking too much weed and spending too much money and eating too many snacks and just too much of everything that is not fulfilling long term and making connections to my past on why I use all these coping mechanisms and stuff. But also, like porn and being a Russian immigrant in the states.

TF: And what drove the project, where do your influences lie?

I just do stand up and see what’s up. Like I didn’t first come up with the show and then write material. I’ve been doing the material and saw patterns of topics and then decided to focus on s**t and make connections between the material and work it out, but I’d say my therapist Sherri is a big influence and just my life and my parents and heartbreak are the big influencers. I also really got inspired by meeting a bunch of UK comics while I was in Melbourne and seeing their shows and talking to them about the fest gave me a lot of inspiration.

TF: Have you been to the Fringe before, is there anything you are keen to see whilst in Edinburgh?

I love art museums a lot so I’m excited to see some art. There’s a cool cemetery, right? I’d love to see a ghost. I also love going out to eat so eating at all the hot spots with fun comics makes me filled with joy, so many brunches, I hope. I’m also hoping for some sex adventures!

TF: And what are your future plans, beyond the Fringe?

Going on a UK/European tour!!!!!! I’ll be on the road September 15th until -October 1st abroad!!!! And then I plan on being rich and in love and always performing and making things and meeting all my favourite celebs and getting some pet dogs one day.

You can see In The Weeds at Underbelly Buttercup from 31st July – 26th August (not 12th) at 10:35pm. For tickets, please visit
