Nick Dixon debuts at this year’s Edinburgh Festival at the Just The Tonic Mash House with his show, Marriage Material. Last year he went out to LA to write a script with film icon Will Smith after being spotted on Youtube.
Nick spoke with the Fountain about the premise of his show, delving into his personal life.
TF: You are performing at the Edinburgh Fringe this year, how exciting?
It is exciting. Especially as The Times have already called me “Hugely engaging”, and others are calling me “The saviour of comedy”. I can’t comment, you’ll just have to see the show and judge for yourself…
TF: The show certainly sounds intriguing, what is the premise?
The show is called Marriage Material and it’s me wondering if I really am ‘marriage material’ having got engaged. I look at my family and my life and ask the big questions. All through the medium of dick jokes.
TF: And what drove the project, where did your influences lie?
All the crazy stuff that happened in my life – getting engaged, my ceiling collapsing, getting a scary illness. That plus my years of smashing all the top clubs like The Comedy Store, appearing on Comedy Central, and writing jokes for Will Smith. I decided Edinburgh was finally ready for my first hour long show.
TF: What are your plans for the Fringe, having been before are there any tips or musts you would offer to first-time performers?
Take Berocca. Don’t go to the bars. Try not to run into any comedians.
TF: Is there anything you are keen to see whilst in Edinburgh?
I am keen to see September.
TF: And what are your future plans beyond The Fringe?
I am going to tour the show nationwide. We’re just trying to find venues big enough to handle demand. The current plan is to try and attach Wembley to The O2 Arena. That should be enough for the initial warm up shows, then we’ll need something bigger.
