Joshua Burnside not only won the Northern Ireland Music Prize 2017 but is also scheduled to play SXSW next year, after releasing his album, Ephrata, back in May, earlier this year.

Joshua spoke with The Fountain about these achievements, when we can expect him performing in Scotland and the pure joy in being able to play music as a full-time job.

TF: You must be ecstatic about this win, The Northern Ireland Music Prize huh?

It was a massive surprise really as the standard of albums on the shortlist this year was so high, so yeah we’re all really chuffed about it. There were a lot of people involved in the making of the album, producers and musicians that deserve a lot of credit for how well it has done so far.

TF: And you are also set to play SXSW 2018 – how exciting?

Yeah the whole band is coming over with us which should be really fun, some of them have never been state-side so it’s nice to be able to do that, and hopefully more opportunities will come of it.

TF: And to top it all off you’ve just had a new release, Ephrata, triple whammy?

Well we just released a deluxe version of the album with b-sides, demos, live recordings and remixes by the likes of Ryan Vail and Rachael Boyd – check out those guys if you haven’t heard them yet! I’m really pleased with how well the album has done and we’ve toured it quite a lot so I’m getting excited about playing the new songs that I’m working on now.

TF:What more can we expect from you in the near future – are we to expect a UK tour and a trip to Scotland to promote this new album?

Yeah I will be playing a few shows in Scotland in February/March, those dates will be announced soon.

TF: What has been your favourite achievement to date?

Just being able to do this as a job, if you can call it that, is the best achievement I think, it has taken a long time (and plenty of crap songs and crap gigs) to be able to to do this full-time. But winning the Northern Ireland Music Prize is certainly up there as a highlight for sure!
