Fulfil a lifetime dream to see Erasure live, CHECK! Last night, at the Usher Hall I witnessed the joyful spectacle of Erasure in all their unashamedly extravagant synth-pop glory. Review: Michael Pedersen’s Oyster Party for Scott Hutchison, EIBF 2018

The Oyster Party was originally a night that Michael Pederson was to host with his close friend, artistic collaborator and Frightened Rabbit frontman Scott Hutchinson, to celebrate a year since the launch of his poetry collection Oyster, which Scott beautifully illustrated. But with Scott’s tragic passing Pederson decided instead to make the event a tribute to Hutchinson’s life and work. Close friends Hollie McNish, Withered Hand and E A Hanks joined him to pay homage to their talented friend in what I anticipated a deeply emotional gathering.

Review: Surprising Birds by Elodie Jarret

From Walker Studio, an imprint of Walker Books, publishers of Trees and the beautifully illustrated Animals, comes Surprising Birds. The creation of French-Swedish designer, Elodie Jarret, who also designed Big Dog, Little Dog, this ‘lift-the flap’ and learn book is intended to teach colours to children between the ages of three and seven, though arguably even younger readers will quite happily giggle and point their way through to the very end. Chunky, sturdy, square and pleasing to hold, every thick cardboard double page opens out to reveal a boldly colourful and peculiar bird that kids will wish could leap out from the pages and come to life.
